School in the hospital

The lesson doesn’t stop while the child is in treatment.

Through knowledge we build a bridge between the hospital room and the world the child will return to. A teacher comes to the bedside so that one day the child can stand confidently in front of their class again.

Treatment lasts months, sometimes years. Because of their immune deficiency, children cannot go to school — and they risk falling behind just when life after the illness begins.

Thanks to Poznanie AD, the children have free access to the VEDAMO virtual classroom, where lessons are held from a computer. A teacher comes into the ward and works with the children at the hospital bedside — according to their state of health at the time.

School without borders

With the project “School without borders for children with oncohaematological diseases” („Училище без граници за децата с онкохематологични заболявания“), in Raiffeisenbank’s 2017 campaign “Choose to help” („Избери, за да помогнеш“), we reached school-age children being treated in the clinics in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna. The teaching follows two paths:

  • The educational website “Ucha se” („Уча се“ — “I am learning”) — a huge number of video lessons and exercises with which the children prepare their lessons on their own.
  • A teacher — on a weekly timetable, with tablets the children use in the hospital. Not only so that the child does not fall behind, but also so that they can get away from the hospital atmosphere for a while and feel part of their peer group.

A single lesson means a lot when life has come to a standstill.
